Is Curry a Spice? A note from The Curry House in San Jose del Cabo

Curry or curries is a generic term, primarily employed in Western culture to denote a wide variety of dishes originating in Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Thai or other Southeast Asian cuisines.  “Curry powder” is not a single spice, but mixture of different spices makes curry. It can be wet or dry and can be cooked either with vegetable, meat, poultry or fish.

This Sunday Special “The Curry House” is preparing delicious Rogan Josh.  It is an aromatic lamb dish hailing from Kashmir.  Rogan means oil in Persian, while Josh means “heat, hot or passionate”.  Rogan Josh thus means cooked in oil at intense heat.  It is a meat dish which is red in color due to the use of “Kashmiri Mirchi” (red chilies).  This dish is cooked in caramelized onions and tomatoes with medium to spicy wet gravy flavored with aniseed, separately served with basmati rice or naan.

Cabo San Lucas historical sights: El Faro Viejo or Lighthouse of the False Cape

Even though Baja California Sur is a young state, it was officially recognized as a Mexican state on October 8, 1974, it’s earlier days can still be seen around town. One of our favorite historical attractions in Cabo San Lucas is definitely El Faro Viejo, or Lighthouse of the False Cape (Cabo Falso).

About 5km (3 miles) northwest of town, Cabo San Lucas’ historic lighthouse, El Faro Viejo, is perched high above Cabo Falso, so named because it was once erroneously thought to be the southernmost point on the Baja peninsula. The now abandoned lighthouse El Faro Viejo was built in 1890 (some data say it was built in 1865), and signaled ships from 1895 to 1961.  Today not much more than a base remains of this lighthouse, the original lens is now installed in a newer lighthouse higher on the beach. The view is spectacular from 500 feet above water, it’s surrounded by loose sand and spectacular dunes for at least a half mile. In addition to the lighthouse there are also the remains of a shipwreck below. Each year, between August and November, turtles come to this beach to lay their eggs.

There is no easy access to El Faro Viejo lighthouse, but it’s worth visiting and taking a stroll around both lighthouses and enjoying in the beautiful views of sea, sierra and city.

An interesting fact: The movie Troy was filmed at the beach of El Faro Viejo. The admirers of lighthouses will appreciate seeing this historical jewel in Cabo San Lucas.
